Explore our How-To Guide with helpful videos that provide quick answers to common questions and practical tips for maximising the performance of your Coolcare milk chilling system.
In this video, Kane Rangiawha, Technical Services Manager at Coolcare, explains how a Coolcare milk chilling system works on-farm.
He breaks down the system’s two key operating modes—Product Mode, which activates while milk is being chilled directly from the shed, and Vat Chilling Mode, which maintains milk at the correct temperature once it is stored in the vat.
With clear and practical insights, Kane highlights how each mode supports compliance, efficiency, and milk quality, giving farmers a better understanding of the technology that underpins their daily operations.
In this video, we explain what to do if your Coolcare chilling machine alarms. The alarm will sound both at the control box on the machine and at the plate cooler in your dairy shed. Simply go to your machine, check and take note of the alarm message, then press mute on the bottom right of the panel to silence it.
If the alarm continues or the issue isn’t resolved, we recommend contacting your local Coolcare dealer for support.
All Coolcare chilling units come equipped with integrated heat recovery technology. Depending on the machine size, they can generate between 200–600 litres of hot water per hour. The system is valve-optimised to deliver water to your cylinders at 70°C. Heat recovery is fully automated and activates whenever the chilling unit is running. Through the HMI, you can adjust your settings, including the volume of hot water you’d like produced. For added flexibility, there is also a manual fill function available at the start and end of the season.
Each hot water cylinder is fitted with level sensors, ensuring safe operation and reliable hot water supply.
From time to time, your plate cooler will require servicing. As this is a glycol system, there is approximately 20 L of glycol contained in the plate heat exchanger (PHE) that may be lost when the plates are separated. To avoid spills, place a container under the PHE to catch the liquid.
Please contact your local dealer, who can top up the glycol to the correct level. When the plates are split apart, the liquid level in the buffer tank will drop and may trigger a low-level alarm. If this occurs, the system can be topped up remotely if required
All Coolcare chilling units are equipped with automatic frost protection. When the outside temperature drops below 2 °C, the system activates this function. A valve opens to allow water to circulate through the pipework, preventing ice formation and protecting the system from frost damage.
⚠️ Important:
Do not turn off the water or power supply to the unit. The frost protection feature only operates when both are connected.Start of Season Checklist
Operate the vat handle to start the pump.
Listen for the confirmation beep to ensure the system is active.
Inspect all pipework carefully for any leaks.
Close the vat handle to stop product mode.
Check the chilling machine to confirm product mode is operating correctly.
Switch off the vats.
Ensure the chilling machine also powers down.
If you identify a leak, contact your local dealer immediately.
End of Season Checklist
Do not turn off the electricity or water supply — these must remain connected so frost protection can operate.
